Understanding Osteporosis

Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease affecting over 10-15 million Americans and will result in fractures in about 40 percent of women. Although often misperceived as only affecting women, it is also very common in men. Bone densitometry is an essential tool in osteoporosis management.

Bone Density services, or bone densitometry, include a safe, rapid, and painless exam that can help physicians diagnose and manage osteoporosis. These exams measure the mineral content of bones, changes in bone density, effects of therapy, as well as provide physicians and their patients with an accurate picture of future risks.

Osteoporosis is a silent, progressive disease characterized by decreased bone density and increased bone fragility, with a consequent susceptibility to fracture. In the United States, over 28 million people are at risk of developing osteoporosis. Up to 1.5 million fractures a year are attributable to osteoporosis.

Who should consider bone densitometry?

Osteoporosis occurs in women as the result of decreased estrogen levels, therefore postmenopausal women and women over the age of 50 should consider a bone density scan. Other risk factors for osteoporosis include women of Caucasian or Asian race; small frame, short stature, and lightweight; lower than normal levels of estrogen; early onset of menopause.
